Linda is our host for SoCS. Each week she provides us with a topic, and we respond off the top of our head with a reply. This is the prompt for today.
Your Friday prompt for Stream of Consciousness Saturday is “a phrase you grew up with.” Include in your post a phrase your mom/dad/grandparent/sibling used all the time when you were growing up, or just write whatever inspires you based on that phrase. Enjoy!
I. like most kids of my age group, grew up with tons of clichés. The one I remember hearing the most frequently was. “Because I said so.” It used to annoy the bejabbers out of me. I often felt my mom’s rules made no sense. I couldn’t figure out why I could not go to bed if all the dishes were not done. If I cleaned up the kitchen and my brothers used more dishes, I had to clean up their mess before I could go to bed. Because I said so was my mom’s reasoning. It was the explanation for why I could not wear lipstick, shave my legs, stay overnight at a friends, etc.
I swore I would not use that line when raising my kids. I remember when the “why” stage came into my little one’s vocabulary. I tried to have the patience of Jobe. I would answer and answer and answer with reasonable explanations to each and every why until I felt my head would explode. Often the only way to finish the discussion was with the tried ad true, because I said so.
