For Song Lyric Sunday, we are asked to find songs that use the words Cruel, Evil, Wicked, Horrible, or Monster. I usually read other posts before I get to mine. Much to my surprise, Elvis was not in the building.

Some sites I read said Elvis had written this. But according to Wiki he was not the author. There is a ton of  information here, that I knew nothing about.

Don’t Be Cruel” is a song recorded by Elvis Presley and written by Otis Blackwell in 1956.[1] It was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2002. In 2004, it was listed #197 in Rolling Stone’s list of 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. The song is currently ranked as the 173rd greatest song of all time, as well as the sixth best song of 1956, by Acclaimed Music.[2]

“Don’t Be Cruel”

You know I can be found,
Sitting home all alone,
If you can’t come around,
At least please telephone.
Don’t be cruel to a heart that’s true.Baby, if I made you mad
For something I might have said,
Please, let’s forget my past,
The future looks bright ahead,
Don’t be cruel to a heart that’s true.
I don’t want no other love,
Baby it’s just you I’m thinking of.

Don’t stop thinking of me,
Don’t make me feel this way,
Come on over here and love me,
You know what I want you to say.
Don’t be cruel to a heart that’s true.
Why should we be apart?
I really love you baby, cross my heart.

Let’s walk up to the preacher
And let us say I do,
Then you’ll know you’ll have me,
And I’ll know that I’ll have you,
Don’t be cruel to a heart that’s true.
I don’t want no other love,
Baby it’s just you I’m thinking of.

Don’t be cruel to a heart that’s true.
Don’t be cruel to a heart that’s true.
I don’t want no other love,
Baby it’s just you I’m thinking of.

I love all of Elvis’ early work. Not at the extreme level as the Beatles, but way up there.

  1. Popular choice today! I included it as my 2nd song because I love everything about Elvis! I’m still watching movies that I recorded on the DVR from the week of August 16th. I only have GI Blues left to watch for the umpteenth time. Who cares? He is the KING! 🙂
