Pam of Butterflysand willingly shared some awkward moments from her life. She is totally correct that we all have some of those moments in our past. As I read her post a particular work “incident” came to mind. Now I can laugh about it, but at the time I was mortified.
I think I may have spoken about this in another blog. If so, and you actually remember it, your mind works better than mine.
Let me set the scene:
My former spouse and I were at an especially important dinner with many of my teacher friends. My spouse was on one side of me, and on the other side was the spouse of a fellow teacher. I had recently been introduced to this gentleman. He was the superintendent of a nearby school district. The top banana in the entire room.
In my peripheral view I caught a glimpse of a man (I thought my spouse) chewing on his nails. I find the habit repugnant. Without thinking I smacked his fingers from his mouth.
Have you figured it out by now? I did not smack my ex-spouses’ hand. I smacked the superintendent’s hand. I was totally mortified. And what happened next?
My coworker looked over at me and laughed hysterically. She said, “I have always wanted to do that. Thank you.”
The super laughed, my ex-spouse laughed, other teachers laughed, but I was quiet. Not my finest moment.
